DSA at the 2nd East African Regional Education Conference – Nairobi, Kenya

From 25th–28th August 2026, the Deaf Sign Alliance (DSA) team proudly represented Uganda at the 2nd East African Regional Education Conference in Nairobi, Kenya.

Our delegation included:

  • Nassali Mariam Ruth – Legal Advisor

  • Okoda Bonny – Northern Uganda Deaf Program Coordinator

  • Egesa Joseph – National Programmes & Strategies Manager

  • Ndikibulirani Monica – Sign Language Interpreter

✨ Key Highlights

  • Inclusiveness in Green Pedagogy: Ms. Nassali Mariam Ruth raised a powerful concern on ensuring students with disabilities are not excluded from green and gender-responsive pedagogy. She emphasized that while their numbers may be small, their right to participate is non-negotiable. Facilitators welcomed this input and committed to implementing inclusive practices in schools.

  • Advocacy for Regional Policy: Mr. Egesa Joseph highlighted the absence of a unifying East African framework for special needs learners. He called for a dedicated body or policy to ensure inclusion across all EAC member states.

  • Representation & Visibility: The DSA team actively engaged in sessions, reminding participants that persons with disabilities (PWDs) must be part of every educational reform conversation.
